Whether he’s dangling off cliffs or running through glass explosions, Tom Cruise is notorious for performing his own death-defying stunts. While filming his latest movie, Mission: Impossible — Fallout, Tom was tasked with jumping out of a gigantic military cargo plane at 25,000 feet during a skydiving sequence that was recorded in just one single shot.
Tom met up with late-night TV host James Corden during his promotional tour, and he somehow got James to agree to go skydiving with him for a taped segment.
The unlikely duo met up in Perris Valley, California, and planned to jump out of a plane at 15,000 feet. James was in disbelief that he agreed to the stunt and admitted to the cameras that he was utterly terrified.
Tom was also surprised that James intended to go through with it. “Between you and me, I was half-expecting him to text me and tell me he was canceling,” he told viewers.
“The worst part if we die, I will get zero press,” James joked. “The story will be, ‘Tom Cruise Dies — Also That Guy Who Occasionally Drives Around With a Guy.’”
But as you’re about to see, James was able to fight through his fears — and he ended up filming what he describes as perhaps his most favorite segment he’s ever shot.
After some pep-talking, stretching, and heavy breathing, James dropped from the plane, screaming (attached to a professional), while Cruise took the leap all by himself.
The rest was priceless.
